Squidger in hand: Montague Center’s Ferd Wulkan is off to the Tiddlywinks world championships

RECORDER  |  When Ferd Wulkan was in high school, his best friend, Severin Drix, read an article in Life magazine about the game Tiddlywinks.

Then, Wulkan, who now lives in Montague Center, had no idea what the words squidger, squop and winks meant. But, now, he doesn’t even have to think twice.

The 1962-article detailed how British players were coming to the United States, to challenge people to Tiddlywinks matches, which is a game for four players who play in two pairs.

Drix told Wulkan about his new discovery.

No trash pickup? Hold tight, they’re on it!

No trash collection today?  What gives?

I first checked the highly praised town website, nothing there… go figure.

I then called and spoke with Matt Cadran, Office Manager of the DPW, to find out what’s up.  He informed me that there had been an issue with a couple of Allied Waste trash trucks going down yesterday and trash collection was delayed, but he was updated that collection had resumed and Montague would be fully collected today.  He then provided me with Allied Waste’s customer service number, 800.367.7778.

When I called the number I was transferred to a customer service representative named Larry who confirmed Matt’s explination.

Basically hold tight, they’re on it.

Patrick praises Route 2 work

RECORDER  |  Too often government focuses on the short-term, like the next election or the next news cycle, Gov. Deval Patrick told a crowd of local officials and sixth- graders gathered in Town Hall on Monday morning.

But funding Route 2 safety improvements is an example of governing with an eye toward the future, he said.

Candidates for House rep. discuss education

RECORDER  |  Many of the candidates for Second Franklin District representative feel that the biggest issue facing public education, locally and statewide, is funding.

The candidates were asked eight questions at a forum Monday night held at the Greenfield Grille, which ranged from how to make higher education more affordable to what they think is the biggest obstacle to public education. Many of their answers were focused around raising revenue and making public education, pre-kindergarten through higher education, a top priority.

Sirloin Tips & Chicken Tenders and a Crock of Cheddar Broccoli Soup from the Ninety Nine

Dinner tonight was at the Ninety Nine

Crock of Cheddar Broccoli Soup

Monday’s soup of the day is always Cheddar Broccoli, my favorite.  I ordered a crock.  The soup is great, but $4.49 is a bit steep considering you can get a can of it from the supermarket for around a buck.

Sirloin Tips & Chicken Tenders

For the main course tonight I ordered Sirloin Tips & Chicken Tenders from the “Real Sized Entrees for $9.99″ menu.

It doesn’t quiet match the menu picture -

Sirloin Tips & Chicken Tenders

First off, they served the meal on the wrong sized plate giving it the look of a smaller portion than what I actually received.  Secondly, the chicken tenders were a bit overcooked.  Conversely, the steak was delicious.

My portion of the bill was close to $20 when you factor in drinks.  Not bad.

In search of … fossils. Event provided people with a chance to see if they had a piece of history

RECORDER  |  Part treasure hunt, part history lesson, the Jurassic Road Show gave people from all over the area the chance to see just what might have been lurking in their backyards millions of years ago.

The show at the Great Falls Discovery Center on Saturday allowed people to bring items to geologists, paleontologists and collectors and have them evaluated to determine their authenticity and significance.
